This
exercise is a continuity task involving filming and editing
a character opening a
door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite
another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple
of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match
on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.
This is what we would like you to do:
Plan,
film, and edit a 30 second sequence in which a person walks
down a corridor and opens a door. S/he then enters a room
- you could use a point
of view shot here. In the room another
person is sitting. Character 1 pulls up a chair to sit opposite
character 2 - here you can demonstrate the 180
degree rule and match on action. The characters exchange a few words
- use over
the shoulder shots/shot-reverse
shot. A parcel/package/envelope is then exchanged. This
representes the end of the sequence and may offer a resolution
or establish an enigma.
During
the exercise you should try to use at least one close-up and one extreme
close-up. It is also important that you observe
continuity rules and not break the 180 degree rule. All shots
must be taken using a tripod.
You
should also consider:
You will also need to produce:
- A written scenario - one or two sentences blogged under
Preliminary Exercise.
- A paper storyboard - see planning
and evaluation.
- An editing log - see editing.

exercise.
Once
you have viewed the sequence you should write
a short analysis of it. What
did we do well and where can we improve? Remember to use
the appropriate vocabulary.
